Illuminating Nature through Poetry and Visual Art

  • Hambidge Center 105 Hambidge Court Rabun Gap, GA, 30568 United States (map)

In this workshop, we will read a collection of nature poems by Ada Limon, the 24th poet laureate of the United States. As we discuss the poems, we’ll discover how her poems can act as templates for our own writing. We will find our content as we hike the paths and grounds surrounding the Hambidge Center and discuss our poems in a casual workshop setting. We will then return to the woods and gather ideas for our poem’s illumination (for example, see William Blake’s illuminated poetry). Each workshop participant will receive a canvas board on which to write their poem, and Blair will guide them in illuminating the borders with drawing and collage. The class will be a combination of peaceful solitude and happy group work, and each participant will leave with their own beautifully illuminated poem.

You will be asked to bring:

  • Writing journal or notebook

  • Sketch pad

  • Favorite pens and pencils

  • Scissors

  • Personal collage materials
