The past two years have been a time of dis-ease. The deadly and unpredictable nature of the pandemic, contentious politics, environmental crises, increased violence, and righteous protests over racist crimes have combined to bring social anxiety to a distressful extreme. In response, Linda Hall created her series of sculptural Anxiety Masks.
Unlike most face coverings, they conceal the entire head and sometimes the whole body. Anxiety Masks offer a form of protection analogous to the ubiquitous medical mask, but they also protect against violence and discrimination by disguising differences such as race and gender. Yet the masks are all intricately and beautifully different - signifying the individuality and complexity of each person who might wear one.
Becki Rutta’s photographs explore this body of work in varied environments—some private, some public, some commercial, some recreational—documenting how the masks and the surroundings are each transformed by the other.
Linda Hall, a Hambidge Fellow, holds an MFA from the University of North Carolina and has taught studio art at Florida State University, where she specializes in courses on art and ecology. Her mixed-media two- and three-dimensional works have been shown in many regional and national venues, and over the years she has participated in numerous public art projects as well. Her family is rooted in the South, and she currently makes her home in Tallahassee, Florida, where she maintains a studio.
Becki Rutta received her BFA in 2004 from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. A 2008 graduate of the Florida State University MFA program, she is currently working as an artist and commercial photographer.
