Awarded
Elizabeth Greenshields Grant
Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation
July 2021

The Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation was established 66 years ago and awards substantial grants directly to international emerging figurative artists.

Jess has attributed her award in part due to the work she did as a Hambidge Fellow. She writes:

At Hambidge I was working on a 18’ needle felted sculpture that touched on skin. Uncomfortable, thick. Later my work became a bit more experimental with materials. From wool to now foam wax and mixed textiles. I went back to working life size and making work about the different stages women go through in life. Archetypes we as women embody and relate to. This variety of work, size, content and creativity I believe were all factors in being chosen for this Award.

I am so thrilled and honored to receive a grant from the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation. My proposal for my next project is to meet 7 women all from different cultures. Specifically an elder who may be known for their wisdom, healing or for havinf shaman roots. From this time with the women I want to learn as much as I can about each of their cultures, especially craft practices. I will use these experiences in order to create a sculpture representing and capturing their essence.
