Hambidge has miles of hiking trails among an incredible biodiversity of meadows, streams, waterfalls, native plants and wildflowers, and a cove forest. Nature Hikes take place most Third Saturdays, meeting at 10am at the Weave Shed Gallery. Led by experts in fields like botany, biology, ecology, geology, history, and more, each hike is a fascinating lesson about our natural world.
On November 16, Master Naturalist Kathryn Kolb will lead an innovative walk on “Forest Intelligence,” sharing new research about the intelligence of trees, plants, and other creatures. We’ll look at growth patterns that tell us how the forest and its myriad species interact with each other and respond to various challenges – “reading” the forest’s story. We’ll cover info about the intra-forest communication system, the “wood wide web,” how some plants learned to change their behavior in scientific experiments, and how plants employ the principles of quantum mechanics. We’ll muse on the roles that the thoughts and feelings of individual forest residents may play in the greater forest story, and we’ll also have the opportunity to ID some colorful fall leaves along the way.
To reserve a space for this hike, email center@hambidge.org. $5 minimum donation; free for members.
Remember to wear long pants and sturdy closed-toe shoes for all hikes! Dress in layers, bring allergy meds/epi pen, water, a snack and a walking stick if desired. Most of our hikes are rain or shine.
